Kolkata, May 29 The Calcutta High Court on Friday ordered an interim status quo on demolition notices issued by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation for some buildings allegedly constructed illegally.
The notices were issued for some buildings in Tiljala and Topsia areas in south-east Kolkata, where a recent factory fire claimed two lives.
Hearing a bunch of petitions moved by tenants challenging the civic body's demolition notices, the vacation bench of Justice Shampa Dutt (Paul) ordered the interim status quo and said the matter will come up for hearing on June 22 before a regular bench.
Lawyers for the tenants claimed that they were served a very short notice to vacate the buildings.
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation's counsel submitted before the court that the buildings which were served notices did not have sanctioned plans.
