Allahabad High Court Grants Final Extension for BHU Promotion Decision

Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University Ordered to Comply with Court's Directive or Appear in Person

The Allahabad High Court, under the bench of Mrs. Manju Rani Chauhan, J., has issued a stern directive to the Executive Council of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) regarding the promotion of Dr. Sushil Kumar Dubey to the position of Assistant Professor (Stage-3). The court has granted a final extension of one month to the Executive Council to comply with its previous order and finalize the promotion decision, failing which the Vice Chancellor, Professor Sanjay Kumar, may be required to appear before the court.

This directive comes amidst ongoing contempt proceedings initiated due to non-compliance with an earlier court order. The Executive Council had previously resolved to seek a legal opinion from a senior advocate to finalize the promotion issue, as highlighted in their resolution dated October 9, 2025. Despite this, the court noted that ample time had already been provided for reconsideration, thus granting this extension as a last opportunity.

The court has scheduled the next hearing for December 15, 2025, and has instructed that, should the Executive Council fail to present its final decision by this date, the Vice Chancellor will be obligated to appear in court. Furthermore, the applicant's counsel has been permitted to submit a reply to the third compliance affidavit filed by the counsel for the opposite party.
