Delhi High Court Directs Roster Bench Review of CBSE's On-Screen Marking System Irregularities

National Students Union of India seeks systemic reforms and independent inquiry into CBSE's Class XII examination evaluation process.

In a significant development concerning the evaluation process of Class XII Board Examinations, the Delhi High Court has directed that a writ petition filed by the National Students Union of India (NSUI) be listed before the Roster Bench for further consideration. The NSUI, one of India's prominent student representative bodies, has raised serious concerns over the implementation of the On-Screen Marking System by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

The petitioner highlighted systemic issues, technical glitches, and a lack of fairness and transparency in the evaluation process, which they argue could significantly impact the future of numerous students. The writ petition, filed under Article 226 of the Constitution of India, seeks directions to address these concerns, including manual rechecking and physical verification of answer sheets, especially in cases where students dispute the accuracy of scanned copies.

The court acknowledged the NSUI's argument that the deficiencies in the system are widespread and not limited to individual cases. It was noted that the CBSE had previously extended the window for obtaining scanned copies of answer books due to technical issues, with a massive number of applications submitted for re-evaluation.

The Solicitor General, representing the CBSE, informed the court about the measures already taken, such as opening the portal for re-evaluation and addressing individual grievances. However, the petitioner insists on a more comprehensive approach, including an independent inquiry into the irregularities and compensatory measures for affected students.

The matter has now been scheduled for further hearing before the Roster Bench on July 6, 2026, where the court is expected to deliberate on the NSUI's demands for systemic reforms and the potential implications on the 17.8 lakh students who appeared for the examinations.

Bottom Line:

Irregularities in the On-Screen Marking System implemented by CBSE for Class XII examinations - Petitioner, a student representative body, sought directions for systemic reforms, addressing technical glitches, and re-evaluation of answer sheets - Matter listed before the Roster Bench for further consideration.
