Rajasthan High Court Directs Overhaul of Waste Management in Jodhpur

Municipal Corporation Mandated to Deploy Scavenging Gangs and Establish Monitoring Cells to Ensure Effective Sanitation

In a significant directive aimed at improving public health and environmental conditions, the Rajasthan High Court has mandated the Municipal Corporation of Jodhpur to implement comprehensive waste management strategies. This directive comes as a result of the court's proceedings in the civil writ petition filed by Mahesh Gehlot against the State of Rajasthan. The court emphasized the urgent need for enhanced sanitation measures and effective garbage removal systems in the city.

Presided over by Justices Vinit Kumar Mathur and Bipin Gupta, the bench underscored the importance of deploying scavenging gangs across Jodhpur to strengthen sanitation efforts. The roads have been strategically divided into zones, with dedicated teams responsible for maintaining cleanliness and preventing garbage accumulation. A significant aspect of this initiative is the establishment of a dedicated monitoring cell to ensure that all sanitation activities are conducted efficiently at the ground level.

The compliance report submitted by the Municipal Corporation highlighted several key measures, including the deployment of auto tippers for door-to-door garbage collection and the establishment of waste transit stations. These measures aim to mitigate public health risks and ensure adherence to the Solid Waste Management Guidelines.

Furthermore, the court was informed about the ongoing process of constituting ward committees. These committees, comprising elected representatives and reputable locals, will closely monitor sanitation efforts and report any shortcomings to the Municipal Board. This grassroots approach is designed to ensure accountability and enhance the effectiveness of waste management strategies.

The Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation assured the court of taking all necessary steps to make Jodhpur clean and hassle-free. He also pledged disciplinary action against officials failing to perform their duties as per the competent authority's orders.

The court has granted the Municipal Corporation time to submit an updated compliance report, with the next hearing scheduled for December 11, 2025.

Bottom Line:

Directions issued for sanitation and waste management in Jodhpur city by Municipal Corporation, including deployment of scavenging gangs, monitoring cells, and establishment of ward committees.
