Supreme Court orders the formation of committees to revamp legal studies curriculum for Class VIII and beyond, ensuring compliance with educational standards.
In a landmark move, the Supreme Court of India has intervened in the curriculum development for Class VIII social science textbooks published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). In a suo moto writ petition, the apex court has constituted a three-member committee to finalize the curricula on legal studies in collaboration with the National Judicial Academy and NCERT.
The court's decision came after a compliance affidavit was filed by NCERT, accompanied by an order from the Ministry of Education. The committee includes eminent personalities such as Hon'ble Justice Smt. Indu Malhotra, former Supreme Court Judge; Shri K.K. Venugopal, Senior Advocate and Former Attorney General; and Prof. Shri Prakash Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University. This committee will collaborate with the National Judicial Academy to design comprehensive legal studies curricula for Class VIII and other grades.
Furthermore, the NCERT has reconstituted the National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC) with 20 distinguished members. The committee is chaired by Shri M.C. Pant, former Chancellor of the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration, with Prof. Manjul Bhargava from Princeton University as the Co-Chairperson.
The decision underscores the court’s commitment to ensuring that educational materials adhere to national standards and provide quality legal education to students. The court has also addressed applications for impleadment/intervention but dismissed them with directives to list pending applications after rectifying defects.
The Supreme Court has scheduled further consideration of the matter for May 8, 2026, indicating ongoing oversight into the implementation of these educational reforms.
