In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court of India has stayed the execution of the death sentence awarded to Atul Nihale, pending the hearing and final disposal of appeals in the case. The order was passed by a bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and N.V. Anjaria, in response to the appeal against the judgment of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh, Jabalpur.

The court has directed the collection of comprehensive information pertinent to the sentencing process. This includes reports from Probation Officers, a detailed account of the appellant's conduct and work in jail, and a psychological evaluation by a specialized medical team. The respondent state, represented by Mr. Rajan Kumar Chourasia and Ms. Mrinal Gopal Elker, has been instructed to submit the necessary reports within twelve weeks. A special provision has been made for Ms. Devika Rawat from NALSAR University of Law to conduct interviews and access relevant documents to prepare the Mitigation Investigation Report, with strict confidentiality measures in place.
