Mumbai, Aug 24 The Bombay High Court on Monday highlighted the gap between the "on paper" action by the Mumbai civic body against dumping of garbage on public roads and "reality", warning of action against officers over dirty streets and asking the BMC to put its house in order.
A bench of Justices G S Kulkarni and Neel Gokhale sought to know from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner the steps being taken to ensure that garbage and other waste materials are not dumped on streets.
"We want to know what action is being taken? We feel whatever the BMC claims is only on paper, and the action, in reality, is not taken," the bench said.
The high court noted that in every ward, streets are garbage-filled, which shows ward officers are shirking their responsibilities.
Warning of action against the concerned ward officers, the bench said, "Put your house in order or else we will take action. Take our word".
The high court heard a bunch of petitions raising concerns about the pollution, persistent foul odour, gas emissions and health risks for residents in the vicinity of the suburban Kanjurmarg dumping ground.
The bench posted the matter for further hearing on Thursday, by which time the municipal commissioner has to inform the court of the action taken against garbage dumping on streets.
