Mumbai, Oct 9 A special NIA court here on Friday framed an additional charge of terror funding under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against alleged Islamic State recruit Areeb Majeed.
Special Judge Abhay Joglekar framed the fresh charge under Section 17 (punishment for raising funds for terrorist act) of UAPA following the submission of a fifth supplementary chargesheet by the National Investigation Agency.
According to the additional charge, Majeed, between May 2014 and October 2014, knowingly received and collected USD 1,000 from a Kuwaiti national after establishing contact through individuals associated with the banned terror outfit Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
The court noted that the 33-year-old Kalyan resident knowingly procured the funds to facilitate his travel to join ISIL, undergo training in handling firearms and explosives, and participate in terrorist acts, including fidayeen (suicide) attacks.
The charges also stated that the money was intended to finance his active participation in waging war against the governments of Iraq and Syria, nations that share peaceful diplomatic ties with India.
Majeed pleaded not guilty to the charge and preferred to face trial, following which the charges were framed.
The court had earlier framed three charges against Majeed in April 2017.
The NIA had alleged Majeed had travelled to Syria to join the terrorist group ISIS and returned to India to carry out terror activities.
He was arrested in November 2014 under UAPA and the Indian Penal Code for waging war against the nation and other offences.
