Cal HC grants anticipatory bail to rebel TMC leader Anubrata Mondal in extortion case

Kolkata, Jul 27 The Calcutta High Court on Monday granted anticipatory bail to rebel Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal in connection with a case at Santiniketan police station in Birbhum district alleging extortion and theft.

Taking into account that the accusation originates in 2021 and the complaint was lodged with the police in 2026, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh granted anticipatory bail to Mondal.

Noting that the investigation of the case is still in progress, the court directed the petitioner to make himself available before the investigating officer within 10 days.

Justice Ghosh directed that thereafter, the IO of the case would fix dates, if required, for Mondal's questioning as part of the investigation.

Praying for his bail, Mondal's lawyer stated that the accusations relating to alleged theft, extortion and criminal intimidation date back to 2021, and another accused person has already been granted bail.

The advocate representing the state opposed the anticipatory bail prayer, submitting that the investigation is still in progress.

Mondal, a former TMC Birbhum district president, recently joined the Ritabrata Banerjee-led rebel faction of the party.
