Cal HC grants bail to RG Kar hospital graft case accused Suman Hazra

Kolkata, Oct 30 The Calcutta High Court on Friday granted bail to Suman Hazra, a medical goods contractor arrested by the CBI in connection with alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The Supreme Court on October 16 granted bail to former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh, the main accused in the case.

Hazra was arrested by the CBI on September 4, 2024, in connection with the probe into alleged financial irregularities and tender-related corruption at the state-run hospital.

The vacation bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh granted bail to Hazra after his lawyer pointed out that the main accused had already been granted relief by the apex court.

Hazra had claimed that he was falsely implicated in the case on the allegation that he had entered into a criminal conspiracy with Ghosh and violated norms and rules governing the supply of items through tenders to secure undue benefits for different firms owned by him.

The allegations of financial irregularities at the hospital came to light following nationwide outrage over the rape and murder of an on-duty doctor there in August 2024.

The high court had transferred the probe into the alleged financial irregularities from a state-constituted Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the CBI following a petition by a former deputy superintendent of the hospital.
