Kolkata, Sep 28 The Calcutta High Court will on October 6 hear a petition by Mamata Banerjee’s TMC faction leader Abhishek Banerjee over the “sudden withdrawal” of his Z-plus security cover following the West Bengal assembly election results in May.
The Diamond Harbour MP’s lawyer moved the court of Justice Krishna Rao on Monday, seeking urgent hearing of his petition.
Justice Krishna Rao said the plea will be taken up for hearing on October 6, and directed the petitioner to serve notice upon the parties in the meantime.
Abhishek Banerjee's lawyer Ayan Bhattacharjee stated that his client had been allotted Z-plus security cover since 2016.
Bhattacharjee said that in 2024, after an assessment of the threat perception to Abhishek Banerjee by the Union home ministry, the MP was granted Z-plus security cover all over India.
His counsel alleged that this security cover was suddenly withdrawn following the West Bengal assembly election results in May this year, which the BJP won defeating the TMC.
Bhattacharjee also claimed that Abhishek Banerjee has faced attacks on four occasions following withdrawal of the security cover.
His lawyer submitted that the MP had made a representation to the government for restoration of the security cover, following which the personnel posted at Abhishek Banerjee’s house were also withdrawn.
In late May this year, Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly heckled and pelted with eggs at Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas.
