New Delhi, Jul 2 Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has nominated Justice BV Nagarathna as chairperson of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee with effect from June 29.
The appointment was notified in the gazette, which says, "In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3A of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 (39 of 1987), Hon'ble the Chief Justice of India is pleased to nominate Hon'ble Smt. Justice Bangalore Venkataramiah Nagarathna, Judge, Supreme Court of India, as Chairperson of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee with effect from 29.06.2026…".
Justice Nagarathna succeeds Justice JK Maheshwari, who retired on June 28 after serving as SCLSC chairperson since November 24, 2025.
The second senior-most judge of the apex court, Justice Nagarathna is slated to become the first woman Chief Justice of India in September 2027.
