Azamgarh (UP), Jul 10 A court in this Uttar Pradesh district sentenced three men to rigorous life imprisonment on Friday after convicting them in a 2024 murder case, while acquitting a fourth accused for want of evidence.

The court also slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 each on the three convicts.

District and Sessions Judge Jai Prakash Pandey directed that 80 per cent of the fine amount, if realised, be paid to the victim's wife as compensation. The court further directed the superintendent of police to initiate action against the investigating officer, Manish Pal, observing that the probe was not conducted properly.

According to the prosecution, Vinod Chauhan of Alampur village under the Atraulia police station had a rivalry with Ramsevak Chauhan.

Following a case lodged on a complaint from Vinod Chauhan's wife, Israwati, on September 22, 2024, the accused allegedly shot the former's father, Shriram, dead on the night of September 29, 2024.

In his complaint to police over his father's killing, Vinod Chauhan had named 10 people, including Shubham Chauhan. After investigation, police filed a chargesheet against four accused. The prosecution examined nine witnesses during the trial.

After hearing both sides, the court convicted Shubham Chauhan, Ramsevak Chauhan and Surendra, and sentenced them to rigorous life imprisonment. The fourth accused, Satiram, was acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
