Mangaluru (Karnataka) Jul 29 A court on Wednesday remanded Chethan, an accused in the murder of nurse Lavanya at the KSRTC bus stand in the city on July 16, to four days of police custody.
Police said Chethan was taken into custody after being discharged from Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru, where he had been undergoing treatment after allegedly consuming rat poison at the time of his arrest.
According to police, the accused was produced before a local court following his discharge, which granted police custody for four days.
Soon after securing custody, Bantwal Town Police took Chethan to the scene of the crime and conducted a spot inspection.
Investigators carried out other procedural formalities as part of efforts to reconstruct the sequence of events and gather additional evidence.
Police said the accused would be questioned further during the custody period as the investigation continues.
It may be recalled that Lavanya was allegedly murdered in broad daylight at the KSRTC bus stand in BC Road on July 16, an incident that left onlookers shocked.
Chethan had allegedly attacked her with a machete at BC Road, a busy public place. He fled after the attack but was later traced and arrested in Mangaluru.
During the arrest, he is said to have consumed rat poison and was admitted to Wenlock Hospital, delaying his custodial interrogation until doctors declared him fit.
