New Delhi, Oct 15 The Bar Council of Delhi has written to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, condemning personal attacks on judges.
It also urged all Bar Council members and responsible citizens to exercise restraint while criticising the judiciary.
In a letter dated October 13, the Bar body said the judiciary is an indispensable pillar of our constitutional democracy and the rule of law survives and flourishes only when the nation has an independent and effective judicial system.
The letter comes in the backdrop of a major political controversy over a social media post by the Congress' Kerala unit demanding the resignation of CJI Surya Kant.
"Levelling uncorroborated, sensational allegations without concrete evidence, especially across public and digital platforms, creates unjustified prejudice, hinders the regular functioning of the justice delivery system, and lowers the dignity of the courts in the eyes of public," the letter said.
"While constructive criticism of judicial decisions is a recognised hallmark of a democratic society, unsubstantiated personal attacks cannot be tolerated and is condemnable. The council urges all members of the Bar and responsible citizens to exercise restraint, uphold the majesty of the law, and desist from amplifying unsubstantiated narratives that erode institutional integrity," it said further.
