Delhi High Court Grants Sony Pictures an Ex Parte Ad Interim Injunction Against Rogue Websites

Dynamic injunction aims to curb unauthorized streaming and reproduction of copyrighted sporting events by infringing websites.

The Delhi High Court, on July 1, 2026, granted an ex parte ad interim injunction in favor of Sony Pictures Networks India Private Limited against several rogue websites, including Cricfree.Cyou, to prevent unauthorized streaming and reproduction of copyrighted sporting events. Presided over by Justice Jyoti Singh, the court recognized the plaintiff's prima facie case, highlighting the repeated infringement of Sony's exclusive broadcasting rights by the defendants.

Sony Pictures, a leading media and entertainment company in India, sought legal intervention to safeguard its exclusive media rights over various international cricket tournaments and other sporting events. The court acknowledged that the plaintiff had invested substantial resources in acquiring, promoting, and broadcasting high-quality content. Unauthorized streaming by the defendants posed a significant threat to these investments, potentially causing irreparable harm.

The judgment emphasized the dynamic nature of online copyright infringement. The court granted a "dynamic injunction," restraining the defendants and their mirror or redirect websites from hosting or streaming Sony's copyrighted content without authorization. This legal approach aims to adapt to the evolving methods employed by infringing websites, which often operate under pseudonymous domain names and hide behind privacy services.

In addition to the injunction, the court issued directives to Domain Name Registrars (DNRs), Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and government authorities to block access to the identified rogue websites. The court allowed Sony Pictures to notify newly discovered infringing websites for immediate blocking during the ongoing sporting events.

The decision marks a significant step in combating digital piracy, emphasizing the need for effective legal measures to protect intellectual property rights in the digital age. Sony Pictures, through its online streaming platform Sony LIV, provides a wide range of content, including live sports, to millions of viewers worldwide. The court's order aims to preserve the integrity of Sony's broadcasts and prevent unauthorized entities from profiting from its content.

This case sets a precedent for addressing online copyright violations and reinforces the judiciary's commitment to protecting content creators' rights in an increasingly digital world.

Bottom line:-

Copyright law - Grant of an "ex parte ad interim injunction" against rogue websites for unauthorized streaming, reproduction, and dissemination of copyrighted sporting events to protect exclusive broadcast reproduction rights.
