Chennai, Jul 24 Former minister and DMK leader V Senthil Balaji appeared before the Principal Sessions Court here on Friday and furnished bonds and sureties to comply with his bail conditions.
He was asked to appear twice – morning and evening – before the Triplicane police daily in connection with the ruling TVK legislator bribery case.
The Madras High Court had granted him conditional anticipatory bail in the case on July 8, asking him to surrender before the lower court, requiring the execution of personal bonds, sureties, and regular appearance in the police station.
Accordingly, Balaji appeared before the Principal Sessions Judge S Karthikeyan and furnished bonds for Rs 25,000 along with two sureties for a matching amount, which was accepted by the court.
The judge directed Balaji to appear before the Triplicane police daily from tomorrow, in compliance with the bail conditions, until further notice, and sign in the station register.
The case relates to a complaint preferred by ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam legislator N Ilaiyaraja representing Uthangarai Assembly constituency, before the Triplicane police on June 29 that Senthil Balaji and his brother Ashok Kumar offered a bribe of Rs 35 crore to vote against a proposed no-confidence motion against the Assembly Speaker.
Fourteen people, including intermediaries, were arrested by the police so far besides confiscating cash amounting to Rs 2.82 crore.
They had conspired to execute a “Meghalaya Project” to destabilise the TVK government and had aimed to influence 15 ruling party MLAs to vote against the government in the proposed motion against the Speaker, police had said.
His brother Ashok Kumar could not appear today due to his involvement in another case and he is expected to surrender on Monday, a source said.
