Faridabad, Aug 30 A court here has sentenced a man to six months' simple imprisonment in an cheque bounce case, ordering the convict to pay Rs 1.58 lakh as compensation, police said on Sunday.
According to police, Vijay Kumar had issued a cheque to a man named Sonu on December 7, 2022. The cheque bounced upon presentation at a bank, with the matter reaching court on January 9, 2023.
During the sentencing, Vijay Kumar requested the court to show leniency.
The complainant's counsel, however, submitted there were no grounds for leniency and demanded maximum punishment.
Considering the facts of the case, the court noted that the accused had issued a cheque in favour of the complainant, which had bounced.
The court observed that no mitigating circumstances existed to warrant leniency.
Consequently, the court imposed a sentence of six months of simple imprisonment under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act in the case, police said.
The court also ordered the convict to pay Rs 1.58 lakh as compensation to the complainant.
This amount is intended to compensate the complainant for the inconvenience caused by the cheque bounce and the expenses incurred during the litigation.
The compensation amount must be deposited within one month from the date of the order.
The court clarified that if the accused fails to pay the compensation amount within stipulated time, he will have to undergo an additional two months of simple imprisonment, police said.
