Muzaffarnagar, Jul 17 A fast-track court in Muzaffarnagar on Friday sentenced four men to death for the murder of a farmer in 2011 during an attempted robbery in the neighbouring Shamli district, a government lawyer said.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar convicted Ajit, Suraj alias Kala, Anil and Sunil under Section 302 of the erstwhile IPC and imposed a fine of Rs 1.2 lakh on each.

Government counsel Kuldeep Kumar said farmer Raj Singh of Bhokaheri village was travelling on a motorcycle with his friend Bijendra to his sister's house on August 20, 2011, when they were intercepted by unidentified assailants near Kudana village under the Shamli police station area.

The accused attempted to rob them. Raj Singh was shot dead after he resisted, while Bijendra was tied up and thrown into a nearby sugarcane field, Kumar said.

A complaint was lodged by the victim's nephew, Rahul Malik, against unidentified persons.

During the investigation, police identified the four accused, arrested them and filed a chargesheet, following which they were tried and convicted by the court, the prosecutor said.
