Ranchi, July 21 The Jharkhand High Court on Wednesday directed the state government to frame rules for the operation of slaughterhouses in the state.
The directive came while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) over the sale of meat in the open here in violation of municipal norms.
Following the court's directive, the government sought a month's time to place on record the rules and regulations to run the abattoirs.
The state government's counsel told the bench of Chief Justice M S Sonak and Justice Rajesh Shankar that a draft of the rules and regulations for running slaughterhouses has already been sent to the finance department.
After getting its clearance, the draft rules will be placed before the Cabinet for its approval, the counsel told the bench.
Following this, the court fixed August 20 as the next date of hearing in the matter.
The PIL stated that illegal butcher shops have mushroomed in the state capital and sell meat in the open without putting up a black glass that is mandatory. Meat is hung openly in gross violation of the municipal corporation rules, it stated.
