Gurugram, Sep 19 A court here has sentenced a man to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him after convicting him in a 2023 murder case, police said on Saturday.
The case pertained to the death of Kalpana, a domestic worker the convict Mukesh had been living with at the time. She died after falling from a rooftop on February 20, 2023.
According to a complaint lodged with Sector 14 police station by the deceased's elder sister, Kalpana had worked as a domestic worker in Gurugram for six to seven years. Since January 2023, she had been residing at a hostel in Delhi's Khanpur area and was also preparing to join a new job.
From February 10, she began staying with a friend, Mukesh (31), a resident of Bhuragaon in Assam. Kalpana last spoke to her sister over the phone on February 18, the complaint said.
The complainant said she was informed on February 20, 2023 that her sister had committed suicide and was at the hospital. On reaching the hospital, she learnt that her sister had fallen from the rooftop.
The complainant said Kalpana was with Mukesh at the time of the incident and that she could not have committed suicide. She demanded a fair and impartial investigation into the incident.
Accordingly, an FIR was registered, and Mukesh was arrested the same day.
Gurugram Police conducted a thorough investigation, collected all necessary evidence and witness statements, and filed a charge-sheet against the accused.
"On Friday, the court pronounced the judgment. After considering the evidence and witness testimonies presented by the police, the court convicted the accused and sentenced him to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him," a Gurugram Police spokesperson said.
