Kolkata, Jul 7 The Calcutta High Court will on Friday hear Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee's challenge to a Bidhannagar court order directing him to give his voice sample for an investigation into alleged intimidatory statements he made during the West Bengal assembly election campaign.
Upon Banerjee's lawyer mentioning the challenge to the subdivisional court order and seeking an early hearing, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya said that the TMC MP has already been granted protection from any coercive action in connection with the case until July 31.
Additional Advocate General Rajdeep Majumdar, representing the state government, told the court that the protection was granted on the condition that Banerjee cooperate with the investigation, and as such, he should give the voice sample as directed by the Bidhannagar court.
He stated that the investigating officer, for the purpose of the probe, wanted a voice sample of Banerjee.
The Diamond Harbour MP challenged the order of the SDJM court directing him to appear before a magistrate and record his voice sample on July 8 in connection with a police investigation into alleged intimidatory statements he made during the West Bengal assembly election campaign.
Justice Bhattacharyya directed that the matter would be heard on Friday.
The high court had on May 21 granted Banerjee protection from coercive action until July 31 in connection with the FIR regarding his alleged comments at a public meeting in April during the state assembly election campaign.
The high court had then directed Banerjee to cooperate with the probe and not travel abroad without its permission.
The TMC MP had prayed for quashing the FIR over his comments against the leaders and workers of a rival party at a public meeting in the run-up to the second phase of the West Bengal assembly polls, which was held on April 29.
