Latur, July 21 A court in Latur district of Maharashtra has sentenced a chain-snatcher to rigorous imprisonment for three years in a 2023 case, noting that the prosecution has proved the charge with strong evidence.
Judicial Magistrate First Class AS Gunjawate of Nilanga passed the order on Monday, convicting the accused, Sagar alias Tillu Bhagwan Sonwane, under section 392 (Punishment for robbery) of the Indian Penal Code and imposing a fine of Rs 5,000.
Defaulting payment of the fine will attract simple imprisonment for two months.
It also directed that Rs 3,000 from the fine amount be paid to the complainant as compensation under section 357(3) of the Code of Criminal Procedure and granted the benefit of set-off for the 150 days the accused had already spent in judicial custody under section 428 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The court acquitted Sonwane of the charge under Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the IPC.
The incident occurred on February 18, 2023, when an unidentified bike rider snatched a pedestrian woman's gold mangalsutra, weighing around eight grams and valued at about Rs 40,000, in Aurad Shahajani village in Nilanga tehsil and fled the spot.
Police investigated the case and filed a chargesheet.
