Ballia (UP), Oct 17 A court in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia has sentenced a man, his elder brother, and his sister-in-law to life imprisonment for the dowry-related murder of his wife, officials said on Saturday.
Sharing details of the case, district government counsel Sanjeev Singh said that Rajni, the daughter of Parmatma Singh from Budaun district, got married to Amlesh Singh, a resident of Athilapur village in Ballia, on February 25, 2020.
However, shortly after the marriage, Rajni's in-laws began harassing her over dowry demands. On January 28, 2021, they locked Rajni in a room, beat her, poured kerosene on her body and set her on fire, causing her death.
Based on a complaint filed by Rajni's father, a case was registered at the Rasra police station against Amlesh, his elder brother Kamlesh Singh, his mother, and his two sisters-in-law, Ruby and Kajal.
Following the investigation, police filed a chargesheet naming Amlesh, Kamlesh and Ruby as the main accused.
On Friday, District and Sessions Judge Anil Kumar Jha convicted the trio and sentenced them to life imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 45,000 each.
