Man in UP's Mainpuri sentenced to 10 years' RI for molesting woman who later died by suicide

Mainpuri (UP), Aug 13 A special court here has sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for molesting a 19-year-old woman, who later died by suicide in 2017, a prosecution official said on Thursday.


Special Judge Talewar Singh convicted Manoj Kumar (30), a resident of Nagla Chiroji village under Kuraoli police circle, after hearing arguments from both sides and examining witness and documentary evidence, Special Public Prosecutor Vipin Kumar Chaturvedi said.


According to the prosecution, on February 18, 2017, the woman was on her way to her fields when Kumar allegedly intercepted and molested her and tried to force himself on her. She raised an alarm, following which her father reached the spot and Kumar fled.


The woman later wrote a suicide note alleging that Kumar had raped her earlier and was again attempting to assault her. She subsequently hanged herself at her home and died, the prosecutor said.


Police filed a chargesheet against Kumar following an investigation.


The court, after considering the evidence and hearing the prosecution and defence, held Kumar guilty and awarded him 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 33,000, Chaturvedi said.
