Kolkata, Jul 29 The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the West Bengal government to submit a status report on the progress of the investigation into the violence during a Left student organisations' protest march here on July 24 over the NEET paper leak issue.
Hearing a petition filed by a journalist injured in the violence at Esplanade in the heart of the city, Justice Krishna Rao directed the state to file the report on August 25, when the matter will be taken up again.
The journalist sought directions to the state government to formulate a uniform and binding regulatory framework for protest rallies and public demonstrations in the state.
He also sought continuation of a comprehensive inquiry to identify and take action against all antisocial elements and groups responsible for the violence during the rally on July 24.
The petitioner's lawyer claimed that the Left student organisations' rally was infiltrated by antisocial elements who resorted to violence, resulting in the attack on journalists, including the petitioner, and police personnel.
The petitioner also stated that police took prompt action against the perpetrators of the attack and the state took care of the injured journalists who were admitted to hospitals.
Representing the state, additional advocate general Billwadal Bhattacharyya submitted before the court that the government is taking several steps to ensure the safety and security of the citizens.
