Kolkata, Aug 14 Alleged sand mafia Tulu Mondal, whose name figured in a recent seizure of nearly Rs 50 crore in cash and gold in West Bengal's Birbhum district, moved the Calcutta High Court on Friday, seeking quashing of an FIR against him.
On a prayer by his lawyer, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya fixed a hearing of the matter on August 20.
Senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi, representing Md Nazibuddin Mondal alias Tulu Mondal, mentioned the petition seeking the quashing of an FIR against him, claiming that it was mala fide.
Mondal sought that the matter be taken up for hearing on August 20 so he could appear before the court physically to present his case.
Justice Bhattacharyya allowed the prayer and said that the matter will be listed for hearing on August 20.
The police had, in the last week of July, seized 15 kg of gold and a large amount of cash from an alleged hideout of Mondal, the house of one of his relatives, following which the police are reportedly looking for him.
He has not been seen in public since the seizure was made, an official said.
Describing Mondal as a "sand mafia", who also allegedly deals in stone quarries and their transportation in Birbhum district, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had said in a social media post, "Vigilance and uncompromising action will continue. Crackdown on mafia syndicates will go on."
