SC directs expelled JD(U) MLA Anant Singh to surrender by Dec 1 in murder case

New Delhi, Oct 30 In a setback to expelled JD(U) MLA Anant Singh, the Supreme Court on Friday directed him to surrender by December 1 in connection with the Dular Chand Yadav murder case.

Singh, who was arrested on November 1 last year for allegedly orchestrating the killing in October 2025 in Bihar, was granted bail by the Patna High Court on March 19 this year.

A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and Prasanna B Varale passed the order while hearing a petition seeking cancellation of the bail granted to Singh.

The bench directed the Bihar Police to complete the investigation in the case within four months.

It posted the matter for hearing after four months.

Recently, the JD(U) expelled Mokama MLA Anant Singh and ex-legislator Neelam Devi for six years over alleged anti-party activities.

Singh, a don-turned-politician, had virtually revolted against the JD(U) when he started campaigning for Jan Suraaj Party's candidate Anuj Singh for the recent Bihar legislative council elections.

Yadav, known to be at odds with Singh, was supporting Priyadarshi Piyush who was fielded by Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party in the 2025 Bihar Assembly election from Mokama.

Yadav was killed while he was campaigning for Piyush in Mokama on October 30 last year.

According to Yadav's postmortem report, he died of cardiorespiratory failure due to shock caused by injury to the heart and lungs by a hard and blunt substance, the police had earlier said.

During the hearing on Friday, the counsel appearing for the petitioner said a senior citizen was murdered in broad daylight.

The lawyer argued that Yadav's only fault was that he was campaigning for the opposite rival political party.

"I (petitioner) am here for cancellation of bail," she said, adding the petitioner is the grandson of the deceased.

The lawyer argued that the high court had noted in its order that several criminal antecedents against Singh were on account of his political rivalry.

The counsel appearing for Singh said two persons were granted anticipatory bail while two others were enlarged on regular bail in this case.

He said the investigation in the case was not yet complete.

When the bench observed that it was inclined to direct Singh to surrender, his lawyer said Singh's daughter was getting married on November 25.

"Give me at least four weeks time to surrender. I will surrender after that. Let the marriage get over," Singh's counsel said.

The counsel appearing for Bihar said they have filed a counter affidavit giving details about the status of investigation.

The bench observed that the high court was wrong in stating that the antecedents have arisen out of political rivalry.

The apex court directed Singh to surrender on or before December 1.

"The investigation shall be completed within a period of four months from today," it said.
