SCBA asks advocates to wear white ribbons on Tues over 'manhandling' of lawyers by police

New Delhi, Oct 12 The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has asked advocates to wear white ribbons on Tuesday as a mark of solidarity with fellow lawyers who were allegedly mistreated and manhandled by the police during the recent protests in the national capital.

A circular signed by SCBA Honorary Secretary Pragya Baghel said a majority of the executive committee members had decided to take the step in view of a resolution passed by the Association on October 10.

The Association has also requested its members to gather in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue at 1.15 pm on Tuesday to observe a minute of silence in solidarity with members of the Bar.

The circular urged advocates and members of the Bar to pin a white ribbon to their coats as a mark of solidarity with the lawyers who were reportedly mistreated and manhandled by the police.

The protests in Delhi are being held to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

The SCBA had on Saturday condemned the reported use of "excessive force" against lawyers, who were on their way to Jantar Mantar to participate in a protest called by the CJP against the CEC.

The Association also urged the CJI to intervene urgently in the matter.

The SCBA's appeal comes amid concerns over the impact of the protests on lawyers and the smooth functioning of judicial institutions in the capital.
