Tuticorin (Tamil Nadu), Nov 3 A court here on Tuesday acquitted former Tamil Nadu minister and DMK leader Anitha R Radhakrishnan and his family members in a two decades old disproportionate assets case.
Tuticorin District Principal Sessions Court Judge S Subadevi ruled that the prosecution failed to prove the DVAC's corruption charges regarding Rs 2.08 crore in alleged illegal wealth accumulation and ordered the release of all co-accused too, due to insufficient evidence.
Along with the Tiruchendur MLA, his wife Jayakanthi, his two brothers and three sons have also been acquitted today, bringing an end to the high-profile legal battle that spanned two decades.
The court ruled that the charges against them were not proven.
The DVAC registered the case, accusing the family of amassing Rs 2.08 crore in assets disproportionate to their known source of income during Radhakrishnan's tenure as housing and urban development minister in the AIADMK regime between 2001 and 2006.
He had later switched loyalties to the DMK.
The defence characterised the case as "politically motivated", noting that multiple chargesheets were filed across different government administrations to target Anita Radhakrishnan during his political career.
The Judge ordered the complete release of Anitha Radhakrishnan and all co-accused individuals named in the trial due to a lack of sufficient evidence.
