Ballia (UP), Sep 1 A court here has sentenced a man and four members of his family to 10-year imprisonment for killing his wife for dowry in 2020, a prosecution official said on Tuesday.
District Judge Anil Kumar Jha on Monday convicted Chandan Singh, his brothers Guddu Singh and Sonu Singh, mother Jayanti Devi and father Rang Bahadur Singh for killing Mony, District Government Counsel Sanjeev Singh said.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 each on the five convicts, he said. According to the prosecution, Mony was married to Chandan in April 2015. Her family had given Rs 3 lakh in cash, a motorcycle and jewellery at the time of marriage, the prosecution said.
Mony's in-law's demanded an additional Rs 2 lakh from her parents and subjected her to harassment.
On August 22, 2020, Mony was strangled and then hanged to death, following which a case was registered at Revati police station under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Dowry Prohibition Act.
