Etah (UP), Aug 12 A local court on Wednesday sentenced two former policemen to life imprisonment in a case involving the custodial death of a man in 2005.
Special Sessions Judge Rakesh Dhar Tripathi convicted then sub-inspector Gajraj Singh and constable Mahavir Singh under Section 302/34 (murder committed by two or more people sharing a common intention) of the IPC and sentenced them to life imprisonment.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each on the convicts.
According to the prosecution, Moharpal was picked up by the policemen from his village and taken to the Jaithara police station where he was assaulted in custody, leading to his death.
During the trial, the court found the two policemen guilty of assaulting Moharpal in custody and attempting to destroy evidence related to the incident.
The then Jaithara SHO Manish Yadav and constable Mithai Lal were also named as accused in the case, but both died during trial.
After nearly two decades of judicial proceedings, the court on Wednesday sent the two convicted policemen to life imprisonment.
