New Delhi, Jul 30 A special POCSO court in Varanasi has sentenced a man to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 2.75 lakh after convicting him in a CBI-investigated case involving aggravated penetrative sexual assault on a child, child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and other offences, officials said on Thursday.
The court convicted Ravi Kumar Patel under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Information Technology Act, a CBI spokesperson said in a statement.
The offences included rape, aggravated penetrative sexual assault, using a child for pornographic purposes, storage of pornographic material involving children and criminal conspiracy.
The CBI registered the case in June 2022 on allegations of collecting, transmitting and publishing child sexual abuse material in electronic form, the statement said.
"During the course of investigation, it surfaced that the accused had committed aggravated penetrative sexual assaults against a child. The minor victim was immediately rescued," it said.
After completing the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet against Patel on September 6, 2022, and charges were framed on March 23, 2023.
