Gurugram, Aug 12 A court in Nuh’s Tauru sentenced a woman to 18 months of simple imprisonment in a nearly seven-year-old cheque-bounce case related to a land transaction, police said on Wednesday.
The court of Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate Rupa, which delivered its verdict on Tuesday, also directed the woman, Sugra Khatoon, to pay Rs 4 lakh as compensation to the complainant within two months. Failure to pay the compensation within the stipulated period would result in an additional six months of simple imprisonment, police said.
The case pertains to Khori village in Tauru subdivision. On November 6, 2019, complainant Aash Mohammad filed a complaint against Khatoon under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
According to the complaint, Khatoon had issued a cheque for Rs 4 lakh during a land transaction, which was dishonoured when presented at the bank. The complainant subsequently approached the court, police said.
During the hearing on the quantum of sentence, Khatoon sought leniency, stating that she was a widow, had no other earning member in the family and was responsible for two minor children. The complainant’s counsel opposed the plea for leniency.
After hearing both sides, the court sentenced Khatoon to 18 months of simple imprisonment and directed her to pay the Rs 4 lakh compensation within two months.
The complainant’s counsel J S Saini said the proceedings lasted nearly six years and nine months.
