Youth gets 25 years RI for sexually assaulting minor in Keralam’s Idukki

Idukki (Keralam), Sep 10 A court here has sentenced a youth to 25 years' rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs 2.20 lakh for sexually assaulting a minor after befriending her through social media and promising to marry her.


Idukki Fast Track Special Court for POCSO Act cases Judge Nobel D S sentenced R Amal of Anayadi in Sooranad, Kollam, to 25 years' rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs 2.20 lakh for sexually assaulting a minor from Idukki district in 2023.


According to the prosecution, Amal befriended the girl through social media and sexually assaulted her several times at her house and in Vagamon.


The girl later became suspicious of his behaviour and tried to distance herself from him. However, he continued to harass her, following which she disclosed the sexual assault to her relatives.


The court directed that the fine, if realised, be paid to the girl.


It also recommended to the District Legal Services Authority that the girl be provided adequate compensation.


The Kanjar police registered the case in 2023.


The then investigating officers, E K Soljimon and Sunil V R, conducted the investigation and submitted the final charge sheet before the court.


ASI Asha P K assisted the prosecution.


Special Public Prosecutor Shijomon Joseph appeared for the prosecution.
