Faridabad, Aug 11 A local court on Tuesday sentenced two men to life imprisonment till their last breath for the gang-rape and murder of a woman in 2023. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 2.61 each on the convicts, officials said.
The court of Additional Sessions Judge Purushottam Kumar delivered the verdict following a trial that lasted nearly three years. The convicts were also handed three-year prison terms each for destroying evidence and house trespass.
A senior police officer said that to ensure effective investigation and prosecution, the case was designated as a “marked crime”.
According to police, the woman was gang-raped and subsequently strangled to death under the Mujesar police station limits in 2023.
A case was registered based on a complaint filed by the victim's brother. Given the heinous nature of the crime, the investigation was handed over to the Crime Branch, which arrested the accused duo – Prahlad and Mukesh, both from Uttar Pradesh – who were living in Faridabad, police said.
A spokesperson of Faridabad Police said a chargesheet was submitted to the court on July 29, 2023.
Deputy District Attorney Rekha Jangra said the testimonies of 25 prosecution witnesses were recorded before the court.
Based on the statements, physical and technical evidence, and police investigation, the prosecution presented a strong case to secure the conviction of both the accused, she said.
