Latur, Nov 4 A court in Maharashtra's Latur district has sentenced a man to seven years' rigorous imprisonment for culpable homicide in a 2023 case of assault after a dispute over access to farmland, police said on Wednesday.
Additional Sessions Judge SB Pawar, in the judgment pronounced on Tuesday, also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the accused, Sangram Dongre, failing which he will have to undergo an additional six months' imprisonment.
Following a dispute between two families over a pathway leading to a farmland in Sakol village, a meeting was held at a farm on February 1, 2023, to resolve the issue, but it ended without a settlement, a police release said.
Later, when Shivling Dongre, the complainant in the case, was travelling towards the village on his motorcycle, accused Vishal Dongre allegedly rammed his motorbike into it near Sangram Dongre's farm. After Shivling fell, he was assaulted with kicks and fists. During the attack, Sangram Dongre allegedly hurled a stone at him, causing serious head injuries.
Shivling's uncle, Bhagwan Dongre, who intervened to stop the assault, was also attacked. He sustained severe head injuries after being hit by a stone allegedly thrown by Sangram Dongre and died during treatment, the release said.
Following an investigation, the police filed a chargesheet against the accused.
The court convicted Sangram Manik Dongre under Indian Penal Code Section 304 Part II (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).
The court also sentenced Vishal Manik Dongre and Omkar Sangram Dongre to one year of rigorous imprisonment each under IPC sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 34 (common intention), the release added.
