Kolkata, Aug 10 The Calcutta High Court on Monday granted permission to senior advocate Kalyan Banerjee to file a PIL over alleged removal of loudspeakers from mosques in West Bengal, and said it will hear the petition on Thursday.
Claiming that loudspeakers have been removed from mosques in West Bengal on oral instructions by authorities, Banerjee had requested the court's leave to file a PIL in this regard and sought an urgent hearing.
A division bench presided by Acting Chief Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty, granting leave to file the PIL, said it will hear the matter on Thursday.
The bench, also comprising Justice Atarup Banerjee, asked Banerjee to ensure that notice be served upon the state respondents in the meantime.
Later, Banerjee said the PIL by advocate Danish Farooqui was filed, and referred to a judgment by Justice Bhagabati Prasad Banerjee in 1996, which fixed decibel limits for loudspeaker use.
Banerjee, also a Trinamool Congress MP, accused the Suvendu Adhikari government in West Bengal of instilling fear to comply to its wishes, claiming that loudspeakers have been removed from nearly 4,000 mosques in the state.
