Delhi district court bar urges Centre to raise pecuniary jurisdiction to Rs 20 crore

LAW FINDER NEWS NETWORK |

New Delhi, Jul 15 Members of the Coordination Committee of the All District Court Bar Association of Delhi on Wednesday met Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal to seek enhancement of the pecuniary jurisdiction of district courts from the existing Rs 2 crore to Rs 20 crore or remove the ceiling altogether.

In a representation submitted to the minister by committee coordinator Tarun Rana, Chairman D K Sharma and others, the bar bodies sought an amendment to the Delhi High Court Act.

The representation noted that the full court of the Delhi High Court had last week recommended increasing the pecuniary jurisdiction of the district courts from Rs 2 crore to Rs 10 crore.

"While the recommendation of the Delhi High Court is a historic step, we most respectfully submit that, considering the present economic realities of Delhi, enhancement to Rs 20 crore or removing the pecuniary ceiling altogether would effectively serve the interest of justice.

"It would bring Delhi at par with several other states where no pecuniary limits exist for civil jurisdiction," the representation said.

The committee also urged the law minister to expeditiously prepare the necessary bill and introduce it in Parliament at the earliest.

The representation said such a "progressive legislative reform" would strengthen the justice delivery system.
