Mangaluru (Karnataka), Sep 28 A court on Monday convicted five persons in the 2015 murder of an undertrial prisoner, Madur Yusuf, inside the Mangaluru Sub-Jail, while acquitting five others for want of sufficient evidence.
The Second Additional District and Sessions Court, which heard the case, found Litesh Poojary, Shobharaj, Yuvaraj, Pradeep and Umesh Kombar guilty of the charges.
The court convicted the five accused, but is yet to pronounce the quantum of sentence.
Those acquitted are Sharan Poojary, Mahesh Kumar, Kamalaksha Poojary, Satish Poojary and Latish.
Satish Poojary has passed away.
The murder took place on November 2, 2015, inside the Mangaluru Sub-Jail, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Barke police station.
Following the incident, Barke police registered a case under sections of the Indian Penal Code prevalent before the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita came into practice.
The investigation was conducted by then Assistant Commissioner of Police Tilak Chandra, who filed the chargesheet before the Second Additional District and Sessions Court on January 28, 2016.
After a prolonged trial, the court pronounced its judgement on Monday, convicting five of the accused and acquitting the remaining five.
