Gurugram bar association boycotts court of magistrate alleging 'mistreatment' of lawyers

Gurugram, Aug 20 The District Bar Association, Gurugram, boycotted the court on Thursday in protest against the alleged mistreatment of lawyers here in the court of a judicial magistrate, an advocate said.


The lawyers locked the courtroom of the magistrate and held a sit-in protest outside. The lawyers alleged that the magistrate's conduct towards them is improper and that there are several complaints on the matter, he said.


No official statement was issued by the district courts on behalf of concerned magistrate.


According to the lawyers, on Wednesday, a senior advocate was requesting the court to grant a new date for a hearing, citing personal constraints but the request was rejected and the senior advocate was allegedly subjected to mistreatment and the plea for a new date was denied.


The District Bar Association held a meeting in the morning and decided to boycott the court of Judicial Magistrate Rupam.


Advocate Rahul Dhankhar, secretary of the District Bar Association said that complaints are frequently received regarding judicial magistrates not conducting themselves properly with advocates.


He remarked that advocates play a vital role in the judicial process and that their dignity must be respected.


Advocate Kulbhushan Bhardwaj, former president of the District Bar Association, said that better coordination between the Bar and the Bench is essential. Advocates always work in full cooperation and harmony with the Bench and consequently, they expect similar respectful treatment from the Bench.
