Prayagraj, Aug 10 The Allahabad High Court on Monday stayed the arrest of Lok Sabha MP Afzal Ansari in three FIRs registered by police in his Ghazipur constituency in Uttar Pradesh related to the purchase and sale of firearms on his licence that allegedly went missing.
All the three FIRs have been registered at Kotwali police station, Ghazipur.
The police lodged the cases after allegedly uncovering missing official records, irregularities in weapon transactions and an untraceable rifle purchased on the Samajwadi Party MP's licence.
A bench of Justices Siddharth Varma and Achal Sachdev stayed the arrest of Ansari on his petitions while granting time to government counsel to respond.
The court ordered listing of the case after 3 weeks and clubbed all the three matters.
According to police, the records were deliberately removed "in collusion" with the clerks concerned.
Based on the investigation, three FIRs were lodged at Kotwali police station in Ghazipur against Afzal Ansari, former "arms clerk" Gaurishankar Lal and another arms clerk Sugriv Tiwari under charges of cheating, forgery, criminal conspiracy and relevant provisions of the Arms Act, which were challenged in the petitions.
Ansari had challenged the registration of FIRs, contending that they have been lodged in July 2026 for the missing official documents relating to the years from 1983 to 1987.
