Chatra (Jharkhand), Sep 9 A court in Jharkhand's Chatra district on Wednesday sentenced three brothers to different terms of rigorous imprisonment for narcotics trade.
Principal District and Sessions Judge, Shambhu Lal Sao, sentenced Munshi Yadav to 28 years imprisonment, Pun Yadad to 14 years imprisonment and Ramvriksh Yadav to seven years imprisonment.
Public prosecutor Amit Kumar Shrivastava told reporters that the case dates back to June 7, 2023.
"The Rajpur Police arrested Munshi Yadav, Pun Yadav and Ramvriksh Yadav- all sons of the late Daho Yadav and residents of Baniyaband village—for illegal possession of poppy husk and opium," Shrivastava said.
During the police raid, 84.600 kg of poppy husk (contained in seven sacks) and 4.600 kg of illegal opium were recovered from Munshi Yadav's house.
In the police chargesheet, 99.600 kg of poppy husk was seized from Pun Yadav's house, and 40.500 kg of poppy husk was recovered from Ramvriksh Yadav's house.
The three accused had fled their homes but later surrendered in court.
The court convicted and sentenced the three brothers based on the evidence and testimonies presented during the trial.
"The court sentenced Munshi Yadav to a total of 28 years of rigorous imprisonment—comprising two separate 14-year terms—and imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional three years of rigorous imprisonment. Pun Yadav, has been sentenced to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 1.50 lakh; non-payment of the fine will entail an additional one and a half years of rigorous imprisonment," he said.
Ramvriksh Yadav, has been sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 75,000, failure to pay the fine will result in an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment.
