Court Recognizes Rugby's National Status and Urges Timely Decision to Promote the Sport in Kerala
In a significant development for school sports in Kerala, the Kerala High Court has directed the competent authority of the State to consider the inclusion of Rugby as an event in the Kerala State School Athletic and Games Meet. The direction came in response to a writ petition filed by Ameya Sandeep, a minor and Rugby player who has represented at the National Rugby Championships 2026 under the Girls Under-18 category.
The petitioner highlighted that although Rugby is already an official event in the National School Games, it has not been included in the Kerala State-level school sports calendar. Despite repeated representations made by the petitioner and the Kerala State Rugby Association, no favorable response was forthcoming from the concerned authorities.
Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas, after hearing submissions from both sides, observed that since Rugby has national recognition, its inclusion at the state level is prima facie necessary to encourage and promote the sport within Kerala. The Court emphasized that the matter requires serious and prompt consideration by the Government, especially given the administrative timelines for organizing school sports events.
Accordingly, the Court directed the first respondent, the State Government, to consider the petitioner's representation dated 16.09.2026 within four weeks from receiving a copy of the judgment and pass appropriate orders expeditiously. The writ petition was disposed of with this direction.
This ruling underscores the judiciary's role in promoting inclusivity and growth of diverse sports disciplines in the educational sector, ensuring that emerging sports like Rugby receive due recognition and opportunity at the grassroots level.
Bottom Line:
Sports Law - Rugby being an event included in the National School Games, its inclusion in State-level school sports and games events requires serious consideration by the Government - Court directed competent authority to consider petitioner's representation for inclusion of Rugby in Kerala State School Athletic and Games Meet within four weeks.
