Latur (Maharashtra), Jul 23 A court in the district has sentenced a man, whose wife died by suicide in 2017, to two years' imprisonment for cruelty.
The Sessions Court here on Wednesday delivered the judgement.
According to the prosecution, Mohammad Ishaq Shaikh, resident of Zari (Budruk) village in Chakur tehsil, got married on May 26, 2017.
Soon after the marriage, he began to suspect the wife's character, and beat her up frequently. He also demanded Rs 1 lakh from her family to expand his business.
Although both families attempted reconciliation on several occasions and the accused assured that he would not ill-treat her, the harassment continued, said Additional Public Prosecutor Shivnarayan Randad.
On July 16, 2017, the woman consumed poison and died at a hospital in Latur the next day.
Based on a complaint lodged by her family, Chakur police registered a case under IPC Sections 304B (dowry death), 306 (abetment of suicide) and 498A (cruelty by husband or relatives of a married woman).
The court convicted Shaikh under section 498A and sentenced him to two years' rigorous imprisonment.
