Ludhiana, Jul 23 A court here has convicted and sentenced two men to life imprisonment for the 2021 Jagraon grain market shootout that left two police officers dead.
Additional Sessions Judge Saru Mehta Kaushik pronounced the judgment on July 21 in the case linked to an FIR registered at City Jagraon police station in May 2021.
Baljinder Singh alias Babbi and Darshan Singh have been sentenced to life imprisonment.
The incident took place on May 15, 2021, in Jagraon New Grain Market when a police team spotted suspicious activity in a car.
When assistant sub-inspectors, Bhagwan Singh and Dalwinderjit Singh, and home guard Rajwinder Singh approached the vehicle, gangsters Jaipal Bhullar and Jaspreet alias Jassi Kharar opened fire, killing the two ASIs.
Baljinder Singh alias Babbi was accused of holding an officer, while Darshan shot at Rajwinder, who escaped.
Gangsters Jaipal and Jaspreet were later neutralised by police in Kolkata in June 2021.
After examining 70 witnesses and forensic evidence, the court held Baljinder and Darshan guilty and sentenced them to life imprisonment.
The court also convicted Bharat Kumar for sheltering the accused. Besides, Satpal Kaur, Gagandeep alias Nanna, Jaspreet Singh, Gurpreet alias Lucky and Nanak Chand were convicted for illegal possession of arms.
Another accused, Lucky Rajput, was acquitted of all charges.
The court also ordered compensation for the families of the officers, Rs 25,000 each from fines and additional aid from the victim compensation fund, noting they died on duty.
