Thane, Oct 3 The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) in Maharashtra's Thane has awarded more than Rs 1.17 crore in total compensation to the victims and legal heirs of three families affected by a 2018 car crash on the Mumbai-Nashik Highway, an official said on Saturday.
MACT Member R V Mohite, on September 30, directed the vehicle owner, Girish Chapshi Chheda, and the insurer, Tata AIG General Insurance Co. Ltd., to jointly and severally pay the compensation amount along with 9 per cent annual interest from the date of filing the claim petition.
The crash occurred on June 6, 2018, when a speeding car swerved into the wrong lane and collided head-on with an oncoming four-wheeler near Umbermali village on the highway. Two women were killed, while one sustained serious injuries in the crash, and they were all travelling in the speeding vehicle.
Hearing three separate claims, the tribunal granted the family of Varsha Ajit Shah (44), who died in the crash, a compensation of Rs 20.34 lakh, and awarded Rs 22.14 lakh to the kin of Minakshi Hasmukh Chheda (53).
The tribunal awarded Rs 74.77 lakh to 38-year-old Bhavna Dhansukh Chheda, who suffered severe injuries to the cervical spine, skull, rib, and kidney that left her paralysed.
