In a significant ruling, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has upheld the conviction of Jagdish Ram under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954, while reducing his sentence to the period already served, acknowledging the prolonged pendency of the case and his clean antecedents as mitigating factors.
The case dates back to 1998 when Jagdish Ram was found in possession of adulterated khoya with a milk fat content significantly below the statutory standard. Originally sentenced by the trial court to six months of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 1,000, Ram's conviction was upheld on appeal in 2008. However, his substantive sentence has now been reduced to the two months and 20 days he has already served, with an enhanced fine of Rs. 5,000 imposed.
