Maharajganj (UP), Aug 27 A court here has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping a 17-year-old Dalit girl in 2023, a lawyer said on Thursday.
Special Judge (POCSO) Vinod Kumar convicted Ambreesh Gupta on Wednesday and also imposed a fine of Rs 81,000 on him.
If the convict fails to deposit the fine, he would serve an additional six months of jail, Special Public Prosecutor (POCSO) Vinod Singh said.
According to the prosecution, Gupta established physical relations with the minor on the promise of marriage. When the girl pressured him to marry her, Gupta used casteist slurs and threatened her.
Following a complaint lodged by the survivor's father, a case was registered against Gupta under relevant sections of the law, including erstwhile IPC section 376 (rape), 506, 3(2)5 SC/ST Act and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, he added.
