Chandigarh, Aug 24 Asserting that he would put facts before the court, former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Ranjit Singh on Monday said he will not respond to any legal notice from Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's wife Gurpreet Kaur over allegations that she sought Rs 5 crore to suppress a rape case,
"I just want to say that till now, I have not received any notice. If it has been issued, I am not scared. I will not reply to that notice.
"Whosoever wants to move court, they can go. We will place facts before the court," Singh said here.
Punjab CM's wife Gurpreet Kaur on Sunday rejected as "baseless" charges that she sought Rs 5 crore to suppress a rape case and challenged those levelling such allegations to either prove them or face legal action.
"I will not say much. Our Punjab Human Right Organisation will continue to do its work. We stand by truth. We mentioned that a rape victim was facing an excess and violation of her human rights is taking place. We thought it to be our duty to bring it out in public so that she gets justice," said the retired high court judge, who heads an NGO, Punjab Human Rights Organisation.
On Saturday, AAP MLA Amandeep Kaur told reporters that Gurpreet Kaur has sent a legal notice to Ranjit Singh in connection with the allegations.
The matter came into limelight after the National Human Rights Commission issued a notice to the Punjab government and its police chief over the complaint alleging that Mann's wife demanded Rs 5 crore to suppress a rape case, officials had said on Saturday.
After this, opposition parties have targeted Chief Minister Mann, asking him to clear the air.
The NHRC directed the authorities to inquire into the allegation and submit an action taken report within two weeks. The complainant alleged that a retired judge publicly stated that a demand of Rs 5 crore was made in connection with a rape case, allegedly involving the wife of the chief minister of Punjab, according to proceedings dated August 21.
The complaint with the NHRC, filed by Legal Rights Observatory (LRO), raised concerns that such "interference" could compromise the victim's right to dignity, safety, fair investigation and access to justice, they said.
The complainant has requested independent verification of the allegation, preservation of evidence, and "impartial inquiry into any attempt to dilute or influence the investigation", and emphasised that a rape victim's right to justice must remain "above influence, status, or position".
